Growing garlic is a straightforward and rewarding process that begins with selecting high-quality seed garlic. Start by breaking the bulbs into individual cloves, ensuring each clove is firm and healthy. Plant the cloves in well-drained soil, about 2 inches deep and 6 inches apart, with the pointed end facing up. Garlic thrives in full sun, so choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight daily. Water the cloves thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged throughout the growing season.
Mulching with organic materials like straw or grass clippings helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and provide essential nutrients as the mulch decomposes. In windy areas, mulching can be challenging, and you may need to experiment with different types. Green grass clippings can work well if you water them immediately after application. Our friend Jim Capellini experimented with thick kraft paper, though the results are unknown. In my experience, kraft paper didn’t work due to our strong winds.
As the garlic grows, monitor for pests and diseases, and remove any weeds that appear. In late spring to early summer, the garlic will produce scapes, which are the flowering stalks. Removing the scapes encourages the plant to focus its energy on bulb development.
Harvest time is usually in midsummer when the lower leaves turn brown but the upper leaves remain green. Carefully lift the bulbs from the soil, brush off excess dirt, and allow them to cure in a dry, well-ventilated area for several weeks. Proper curing enhances the garlic’s flavor and extends its shelf life. Once cured, trim the roots and tops, and store the bulbs in a cool, dry place. With a bit of care and patience, you’ll enjoy a plentiful harvest of flavorful, homegrown garlic.
